Sleeper cab allowance: HMRC to review the rate

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has announced that the overnight allowance scheme for drivers will continue beyond 6 April 2022. The news comes after extensive lobbying by RHA for an early commitment to the current rate.

HMRC have also agreed to RHA ‘s request to review the amount allowed under the scheme. The current rate for the bespoke agreement is £26.20, which has been in place for over 10 years. HMRC say the review will take place over the next 6 months.

Operators can now apply for the sleeper cab allowance at the agreed industry scale rate beyond 6 April 2022. RHA is advising operators to speak to HMRC about renewing their bespoke agreements in line with the current rate. Applications can be made via a link on HMRC Document EIM30250 – Employment Income Manual.

New rate

Following the news, RHA plan to sample members about increasing the rate in line with costs. RHA will then provide evidence to HMRC on the issue – and if a new rate is agreed, members will be able to apply for a new notice, reflecting the new amount.

Speaking about the news, Policy Lead – Skills and Drivers, Sally Gilson, said: “This is a crucial victory for the road haulage industry —that HMRC renewed this bespoke agreement.

“Given the increase in costs being incurred by drivers for food, showers and other facilities whilst out on the road, we welcome the news that HMRC will review the allowance in 6 months.”
